2019 Swift Elegance Grande 655

New for 2019 Swift have launched three 8′ wide Elegance models under the Grande sub range. One model, the 655 doesn’t just feature a wide body it also features a new layout not shared with any other caravan.

The 2019 Elegance models feature a new body based on the 2018 Conqueror range, which isn’t been made of the new season. It could be said the the new body isn’t as, dare we say, as elegant as the previous Elegance models with their sweeping front and styled side windows, however the trademark carbon fiber effect gas locker door and graduated brown graphics mark this caravan out as a Swift product.

Due to the unique layout of the Elegance Grande 655 there isn’t a window forward of the entrance door. In fact, plenty of windows are one thing this caravan does appear to lack. The nearside having two bunk windows and a door window. The offside has just the front lounge, kitchen and washroom window. At the front there are the traditional triple windows with the wide sunroof fitted above.

As with most Swift caravans a optional cycle rack can be fitted to the rear panel. There is also a handy external storage locker to the offside.

Once inside the Swift Elegance Grande 655 the reason for the unusual windows layout become clear. Across the front there is an L shaped seating layout with what could be called a TV sideboard. L shaped seating seams to coming back into fashion again after this style of lounge returned in the 1990s. There is a handy round footstool that comes with a removable lid of extra storage and another seat.

Next to the front L shaped seating there is another L shaped seating area. This time the backrests aren’t as thick and there is a curious wooden panel with a upholstered section with an embroidered logo flap concealing a lock mechanism. The reason for this is a fold down double bed. Each lounge comes with it’s own freestanding table, standard sized for the front and narrower for the middle.

Whilst the fold down bed isn’t a new idea, many caravans in the 1960s had this feature, it’s the first time Swift has used a fold down bed. The bed is 6’0″ x 4’5″ and as with Swift models it.comws complete with a Duvalay mattress. Opposite the bed/seating area is a wardrobe with twin sliding doors.

Just past the wardrobe are two fixed bunks, again with Duvalay mattresses and each bunk has a window and individual curtains. The width of the bunks are generous of a caravan at 2’8″ for the top and 2’7″ for the lower bunk. Each bunk is 5’10” long.

Opposite the bunks is a practical L shaped kitchen which comes complete with 190 litre Dometic fridge freezer and FENIX NTM worktops. Whilst compact, the kitchen offeres everything that is needed however the location does not make of a spacious cooking experience.

Across the rear the washroom again is pure Swift in style with Thetford toilet to the left and shower to the right. A heated towel rail comes as expected here.

Specification wise, as the Elegance Grande sits at the top of the Swift range, features such as Alde central heating, Al-Ko ATC, onboard water tank and an Omnivent are standard. Unusual features are a reversing camera and for the first time from Swift a lifetime water ingress guarantee, subject to T&C’s, due to the totally timberless SMART 3 construction.

Overall the Elegance Grande 655 is a unique caravan without any real direct rivals. No other caravan has a fold down bed and luxury six berth caravans are a rearity. An ideal caravan for entertaining too with the masses of seating available.

It may be expensive, however the Swift is nicely fitted out inside and feels luxurious. Externally the styling may be too similar to the lower cost Challenger models however.
