Possibly one of the most unusual caravans made was the Lynton VIP Excalibur.
Launched at the 1985 Earls Court Caravan Show only two examples were made before Lynton ceased trading in early 1986.
Practical Caravan tested the Excalibur and advised that the brakes needed adjusting. The Excalibur and test Volvo 740 made for an impressive outfit.
No one else has tried the ‘wheel at the corner’ approach since Lynton. Possibly too many complications over a standard twin axle chassis to make the extra costs in build worthwhile. Levelling was an issue and reversing took practice too.
I did see an Excalibur on a caravan site in the late 1980s, I wonder if any are still about.

Hi I actually own this caravan, it is the only one in existence as the other was vandalised. It has been stored under cover for 20 years after being regularly used in the UK and abroad.In the early days I would have lots of peopla coming up to me and sayinh”I have seen one like that or been in one like that”. To which I would reply that this was the actual one.
Having five young children I had 3 additional bunks fitted and purchased a 5 sided awning. We had so many enjoyable times in it. Towing was a joy and reversing not bad if you knew what you were doing.
We have put a new florr in the front section but the wall has come away in the main section where it is attached to the floor. this will be my next project when I can find someone willing to undertake it as I do not want any visual damage to the outside. I used to tow it with a Volvo Estate and latterly with a Range Rover.
It was way ahead of it’s time with it’s fittings.
